How to Establish an Endowed Scholarship Home » Alumni Groups » Toolbox » Scholarships » Endowed Scholarship

A regional club may wish to establish an endowed scholarship to support a local student or students. Endowed funds differ from others in that the total amount of the gift is invested. Each year, only a portion of the invested income earned is spent while the remainder adds to principal growth. In this respect, an endowment is a perpetual gift. Always equated with excellence and long-term strength, endowments are absolutely essential if we are to remain leaders in education, research and outreach.

The current minimum amount to establish a named endowed fund at Michigan State University is $50,000. A gift of $50,000, when invested as endowment, will support an annual scholarship fund for undergraduate students. Planning an Endowed Scholarship: One Club's Example

Prepared by Jennifer Turner, Club President for the Chicago Regional Club:

A 3-4 person committee was formed to award the merit scholarship. Local candidates were selected from the designated area by the Office of Admissions and presented to the regional club. The committee voted and the scholarship was awarded by Michigan State. The scholarship winner was invited to attend the Big Ten Luncheon to meet the other board and committee members.
