The 2016 MSU Homecoming Parade will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2016. Online registration for the parade will be available on September 1st, 2016. We encourage all student and community groups to participate. Applications will be accepted online and will be accepted up until parade staging capacity has been met. Rules for floats, displays, banners, or entertainment entries:

  1. Parade entries should be related to the MSU Homecoming parade theme.
  2. Registrations will be accepted based on the capacity of the parade staging area.
  3. Floats can be pulled by horse, bike, or motor vehicle.
  4. Float Dimensions: no larger than 20 feet wide x 40 feet long and 12.5" high (clearance under the Farm Lane Bridge is 13'6".)
  5. Banner Dimensions: No larger than 20 feet long. No taller than 12.5 feet high.
  6. Signs should be placed on both sides of each unit to denote the name of the group.
  7. Parade units must post their unit number on the front passenger right side of their vehicle, float or banner. This number will be provided the day of the parade.
  8. All parade units should maintain an equal distance during the parade route. Proper spacing of all units is important for the consistency of the parade. Parade Marshals will monitor the distance and pace of the parade units.
  9. Parade entries are not allowed to stop at the judging stand.
  10. No changes will be made to the staging order. If switching occurs the day of the parade, your group will not be allowed to participate in future years.
  11. If you have equine or other animals as part of your unit, you must provide your own accompanying clean up personnel with shovels/rakes. Failure to comply will result in removal from the parade.
  12. If groups fail to show the day of the parade they will not be allowed to participate the following year.

  15. Business or corporate sponsorship may not include alcohol/tobacco products.
  16. Parade units must select ONE person to be their Parade Team Leader. This person will be the contact person for your parade unit during the parade. Their primary job is to make sure that your unit does not travel too quickly or too slowly during the parade. They also must make sure that nothing is thrown into the crowd by your group.
  17. Parade entries must be submitted online at homecoming.msu.edu.
  18. To insure safety, items (candy, toys, etc.) must not be thrown from floats/vehicles to parade spectators. Parade entries violating this rule will be asked to leave the parade. Items MAY be passed out curbside by walkers accompanying the parade entry. Items other than candy must be approved by the MSUAA prior to the parade.

Limitations on participation in the Homecoming Parade:

  1. The Homecoming Parade Committee reserves the right to remove any group or individual(s) from the parade.
  2. Again, if items are thrown from vehicles/floats, your group will be asked to leave the parade route.
  3. Parade organizers have the right to pull from the parade any stalled vehicles or groups that cannot keep pace with the parade.
  4. Parade organizers have the right to have groups or individuals removed from the Homecoming Parade for exhibiting bad taste or drunken behavior and for using profanity and objectionable language.

Rules for elected officials:

Elected officials must be incumbents of the positions listed below. If the position is not listed, you are not eligible to participate.

Parade order of the incumbent elected officials is as follows.

  1. President of the United States
  2. Governor of the State of Michigan
  3. U.S. Senator for State of Michigan
  4. Member of the U.S. House of Representatives (East Lansing)
  5. MI State Senator (East Lansing)
  6. MI State House Representative (East Lansing)
  7. City of East Lansing Mayor
  8. City of East Lansing City Council Member
  9. City of Lansing Mayor
  10. City of Lansing Council Member (Campus Jurisdiction)
  11. Township Elected Leader (Campus Jurisdiction)
  12. County Commissioners (Campus Jurisdiction)

**During an election year, one candidate from each party of the above positions will be allowed to participate in the parade.

Elected officials and candidates must follow the following rules:

  1. As an elected official/candidate, you must be the person participating in the MSU Homecoming Parade. You may NOT send a representative in your place.
  2. The elected official/candidate can ride in a car or walk with a sign or banner.
  3. You must provide your own car and driver and signage for your car. Only one car or vehicle is allowed per elected official/candidate.
  4. Sign or banner dimensions: no larger than 20 ft. long x 13 feet high.
  5. Please report to the Hannah Community Center by 5:30 p.m. Enter the Hannah Community Center parking lot via the Fern Street entrance off Abbot Road. Someone will greet you as you enter and assign you your spot in the staging area. Please park in that spot as soon as you arrive.
  6. The parade will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. so it is important that everyone is in their car and ready to go at 6:00 p.m.
  7. If riding in a car they must remain in the car during the entire length of parade.
  8. NO campaigning is allowed; including no campaign literature.
  9. Once you have been assigned a spot in the parade, it CANNOT be changed. There can be NO exceptions to this rule.
  10. To insure safety, items (candy, toys, etc.) must not be thrown from floats/vehicles to parade spectators. Parade entries violating this rule will be asked to leave the parade.
