Alumni LENS — Lifelong Enrichment for Spartans Home » Alumni LENS
THE EVOLUTION OF THE EVENING COLLEGE
For more than 60 years the Evening College offered community education classes with a Spartan flavor to mid-Michigan adult learners.
In recent years, academic and non-academic departments across Michigan State University have made numerous programs, courses and events available to the public, many comparable to offerings traditionally available through Evening College. Among these departments are those who partnered with us in the past. Considering the range of topics available morning, noon and night, with many free to participants, it makes sense to shift Evening College's role from designing and managing courses to serving as a curator and promoter of new and existing campus-wide programs.
With a broader definition of "alumni enrichment" emerging, we have moved away from the constraints of the Evening College name in order to accurately capture the scope of offerings for community members and Spartans around the globe, all the while innovating for the future without forgetting our past.
Leveraging MSU's talent on a broader stage will allow out-of-state alumni who have not been able to directly participate in what goes on in East Lansing an opportunity to connect. There is also a growing desire for career-oriented Spartans to enhance skills that will help prepare them for growth and promotion. And then there are the large number of requests for access to video recordings of some of MSU's finest lecturers, favorite professors and the gifted teachers who are transforming young lives today.
These are just a few of the catalysts that have led to the evolution of alumni adult education at Michigan State and the creation of Alumni LENS.
