Take a trip through MSU’s rich history in this session presented by the University Archives & Historical Collections. Hear fascinating facts about MSU history, campus traditions and things every Spartan should know!

The History of Sparty: The Gentle Giant

  • Presented by the Sparty Mascot Program

  • You have seen him at athletic events, parades, weddings, birthday parties, alumni club events, in ESPN commercials and promoting literacy to children in schools. Have you ever wondered how our beloved Sparty became the Michigan State University icon he is today? MSU’s mascot first began to take form in 1955. Sparty as we now know him is 26 years old, but has had several looks throughout that time. In this session you will learn the origins of Sparty and the Sparty Mascot Program, and get a rare insider’s look at what it is like to portray Sparty. There are many exciting aspects of the program that most Spartans do not have the opportunity to witness. Join us for an in-depth look at Sparty, “The Gentle Giant.”

The Economics of MSU Sports

  • Presented by Dr. Carl Liedholm,
    Professor, Department of Economics
    Kellogg Center, Room 103
  • Most fans know little or nothing about the economic aspects of college sports in general and MSU in particular. Does MSU Intercollegiate Athletics drain resources from the rest of the university or does it generate a profit? Does the MSU basketball program generate more revenue than the MSU economics department? Do college athletes receive compensation commensurate with their revenue generation impact? These and other questions relating to the economics of collegiate and MSU sports will be examined in this presentation.

Kedzie Luncheon Honoring the Class of 1966

Open to all attendees
12:30 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.

The Class of 1966 will be honored and the Kedzie Cane will be presented to the oldest male and female in attendance. A photo of the Class of 1966 will be taken at approximately 3:00 p.m.

MSU Campus Tours

Bike Tour of Campus

3:30 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.
$10 per person bike rental, paid at the MSU Bike Service Center
Space is limited to the number of bikes available, pre-registration required

See the MSU campus on two wheels and feel the spring breeze as you cycle through Spartan land. A volunteer will walk the group from the lobby of the Kellogg Center to the MSU Bike Service Center on Farm Lane where the tour will depart. You will be fitted to a bike by MSU Bike Center Manager Tim Potter who will lead the group tour.

Campus Bus Tour

3:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.
Pre-registration required. Space is limited.
Attire: Casual

See firsthand how the campus has changed since graduation. The bus tour will be hosted by the MSU Alumni Association’s student intern team and will depart from the front entrance of the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center.

Residence Hall Tours

4:15 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.
Take a walk back in time and see how residence hall living is today.

Transportation will be provided from the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center to Molecular Plant Sciences at 7:45 a.m., returning at 10:45 a.m. Return-trip transportation for the full-day session will not be available. Attend special classes taught by Natural Science faculty for an insider's look at MSU's science research and education, and meet fellow alumni, faculty and students.   • Understanding the Processes of Virus Assembly and Infection presented by Kristin Parent, assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology
  • The Universe in a Box: Studying Galaxies Using Supercomputers presented by Brian O’Shea, associate professor of physics and astronomy
  • Long-term Consequences of a High Fat Diet: Breast Cancer in Normal Weight Mice and Women presented by Richard Schwartz, professor of microbiology and molecular genetics

Option #2 - Full day includes breakfast and six classes. Optional lunch available at an additional cost

Were you and your spouse married at the MSU Alumni Chapel? Or have you always wished you had been? Here’s your chance to renew your vows at this special location in a group, interdenominational ceremony officiated by Reverend John Folkers. Space in the chapel is limited so sign up quickly. Friends and family are welcome to attend, although chapel space and parking are limited. Remember your wedding rings. Donations will be accepted at the event.
