Cheryl Pell began her career at MSU in 1987 as the executive director of the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association, a statewide organization that promotes excellence in student media. She also taught publication design and created courses and workshops for journalism teachers. She retired in 2015. For several years she took MSU students on study abroad programs to Barcelona, a city with a vibrant media and arts culture and after retirement, lived in Barcelona for a year. She refers to that special time in Barcelona as her gap year, between retirement and the rest of her life. Currently she is the designer for two newsletters in the East Lansing area, the MSU Retirees Association and the City of East Lansing Prime Time Seniors Program.
