This lecture will offer an introduction to some of the most important events in Scottish history, including the Wars of Independence, the Golden Age of Stuart monarchs such as Mary, Queen of Scots, the 1745 Jacobite Uprising, and the waves of emigration, urbanisation and reinvention that have taken place over the last two centuries. We will look at the clan system and the enduring myth of the Loch Ness Monster, and explore how Scotland’s cultural and linguistic diversity led to it being described as a nation ‘between languages’.
