For over a decade, Spartans from metro Chicago and beyond have gathered annually at SpartyBall to raise funds for local MSU scholarships that assist students in need from the Chicagoland area. SpartyBall 2019 was dedicated to the Roots of MSU — a reflection on where all Spartans begin their journey as a Spartan, on the banks of the Red Cedar.

Proceeds for the event directly benefit the Chicago Spartans’ chosen students who have committed to MSU; these funds have the potential to profoundly impact the future of incoming Spartans. This year, over $10,000 was raised! To make this number possible, several generous donors provided silent auction items for both in-person and remote bidding during the event. Prizes included tickets to Broadway in Chicago plus a luxury meal and one-night hotel stay, a long weekend getaway in Colorado, an autographed Magic Johnson MSU jersey, and many more!

This year, SpartyBall was held at the Chicago Cultural Center and featured special guests such as Gail Tavill, Vice President of CSR & Sustainability at Conagra Brands, James Parrelly, CEO of Amani Coffee, Denzel Valentine, MSU Basketball alumnus and current professional basketball player for the Chicago Bulls, and Satish Udpa, Acting President of Michigan State University. VIP ticket holders had the opportunity to meet these special guests and also access the venue early, take a photo with Sparty, and experience an exclusive champagne toast.

The Chicago Spartans alumni club is an excellent example of how MSU graduates and friends can come together and make an impact on the lives of future students, all while having a great time together and reminiscing about their years on campus.
