Global Day of Service 2019
On April 13, Spartans around the world came together to serve their local communities in the spirit of the Green & White. From cleaning up beaches, to restoring zoo habitats, to distributing food to those in need, Spartans showed up in a big way. With 1455 volunteers contributing to 111 projects around the globe, it’s safe to say that Global Day of Service 2019 was a success. We couldn’t have done it without the many Spartans who donated their time, energy and talents.
"Global Day of Service volunteers make a tremendous impact in their communities. Since we began in 2013, that service is valued at $1.38M to the organizations served."
– Nick McLaren
Interim Executive Director, MSU Alumni
The wide variety of projects allowed volunteers of all ages to give their time to the communities and organizations that matter most to them.
Down in Naples, FL, a group of Spartans partnered with Empty Bowls Naples to spread awareness and raise funds to eliminate hunger. Each participant let creativity take over as they painted a bowl to be sold at the annual Empty Bowls event. A few thousand miles down the road, the Hong Kong Spartans held a Kindness Walk. These volunteers collaborated with ImpactHK to provide homeless individuals with various amenities and food.
The MSU community’s impact was felt around the world
Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds came together for the event. Over 400 current MSU students participated in projects in the East Lansing area, proving that students are committed to the tradition of Spartan service. In addition, many alumni volunteers made Global Day of Service a family affair, bringing along children and teens to better their communities. And, of course, many university staff donated their time to ensure a positive experience for all.
While this year’s Global Day of Service efforts were truly something to be proud of, the work doesn’t stop here. Mark your calendars for April 18, 2020 for next year’s Global Day of Service event! Consider leading a project in your community if you’re ready to take your service a step further. Until then, we invite Spartans to register projects at any time on serve.msu.edu. Service is a year-round effort; let’s show the world the power of Spartans.
