On April 13, 2019, 50 Michigan State University alumni, students, family and friends participated in a service project preparing Xander Bunnies for children in foster care.

Every year in April, Spartans from all around the globe come together to participate in the Global Day of Service. Between service projects created by alumni clubs, employers, current students and MSU community, there is a wide variety of projects to choose from, all of which allow volunteers to give back to communities they care about. Volunteers from all ages and backgrounds work together to demonstrate what Spartans can do in a single day.

On last year's Global Day of Service, the West Michigan Spartans organized a service project where volunteers would work together to prepare Lavender Life therapy plush Xander Bunnies for children in foster care. The Lavender Life company based in Caledonia, Michigan, sells all natural and organic lavender products with the mission of comforting at-risk children. For every Xander Bunny sold, Lavender Life gives a Xander Bunny to a child in foster care.

Marissa Baty is a 1995 graduate of the College of Education at MSU and has served on the West Michigan Spartans board, the MSU Alumni Office’s International Board Advisory Council, and is a member of the MSU Black Alumni Association. During last year’s Global Day of Service, she participated in the Lavender Life service project with her family. When asked why she thinks it is important for Spartans around the globe to participate in Global Day of Service, she responded, “Participating with fellow alumni offers an opportunity for camaraderie among Spartans.” Baty explains how she was able to meet Spartans that she would have never crossed paths with if it were not for this service project. This perfectly exhibits how MSU’s Global Day of Service unites Spartans to serve others in their communities while demonstrating the reach and power of the Spartan network.

Together, volunteers were able to prepare several hundred Xander bunnies to be donated to children in foster care.

This year's Global Day of Service takes place on Saturday, April 18, 2020. For more information on creating a service project or volunteering with fellow Spartans, visit the alumni office webpage.
