Favorite Sparty Memories: Sweet 16 in 2023 at Madison Square Garden! That was my first time in New York and it was very surreal. I could not believe I was on the stage, representing MSU and cheering on our basketball team. I was super excited and a little nervous. And I was starstruck when I saw Carmelo Anthony in the backrooms.

Favorite Sparty Memories: Being in Madison Square Garden was awesome. Also, I enjoyed the big win against Marquette in March Madness and running alongside all the kids during the Izzo 5K.

They are both smiling, with Avery looking excited. The background features a decorative garden bed with white flowers, brick pathways, and a grand arched doorway. The setting is a classic MSU graduation photo, capturing school pride and achievement.

Favorite Sparty Memories: MSU drumline asked if I’d be willing to jam out with them for their last solo of the year. I had NO drum experience but was eager! Game day was snowy and freezing but I was soaking it all in as it was my last game. Playing with the drumline was AMAZING! It was the perfect way to say goodbye to one of my favorite places.

Favorite Sparty Memories: Sparty was requested to attend the funeral of an alum. The doors opened, I walked in as the band played our alma mater: it was surreal to experience the emotions. Once I got up to the front, I took a knee and rested my hand on his casket. Folks were crying and smiling through tears when I turned around. It was the first time I understood what Sparty means to people.

Favorite Sparty Memories: What means the most about being Sparty is giving back to the community. I was doing a pep rally in the city and dancing with fans. One fan I danced with had special needs and as any Sparty would, I gave him all the time he wanted to dance and all my attention. What I didn’t see was the mom of that child. Crying, she said she’d never seen her child so happy before.

Favorite Sparty Memories: The 2015 Big Ten Football Championship in Indianapolis, IN was exciting. Attending the Cherry Fest in Traverse City, MI added a delightful touch to these memorable moments.

He has his arm around Sparty and is raising his index finger. Sparty, wearing his iconic green and white gladiator-style costume with a muscular build, is also raising his index finger. Favorite Sparty Memories:  In the summer of 2015, Sparty traveled to a golf championship at Pebble Beach. Sparty was the starter at the first tee box to kick off the first day. Sparty was pulling the flag for the golfers and started giving advice. After the golfers missed their putt, the caddies would look at the golfers and say “You should have listened to Sparty!"

Favorite Sparty Memories: A standout memory for me was at a baseball game courtyard. Activities had been set up for kids to enjoy, including some small tricycles. I grabbed one for myself, which I was too big for and gave rides to several kids, prompting giddy laughs paired with waves and smiles from parents. Memories like these of the Spartan community are the ones that I value the most.

Favorite Sparty Memories: One of my favorite events was throwing the first pitch at Wrigley Field for a Cubs game. Sparty’s massive arms made it challenging to throw the ball all the way to the plate. It fell short and took one bounce into the catcher’s mitt. I still have the ball with a little scuff from the dirt at Wrigley Field to remind me of that unforgettable experience.

The Michigan State University mascot, Sparty, poses with a young man wearing a Michigan State University Spartan Marching Band uniform. Sparty is in his signature green and white armor with a fierce expression, pointing towards the camera. Years on Squad: 2007–2010

Favorite Sparty Memories: Being on the basketball court for two Final Fours as Sparty, in 2009 and 2010, is a cherished memory. Each moment was filled with pride and excitement. The 2009 Final Four in Detroit holds a special place in my heart. Representing MSU on a grand stage in our home state was an indescribable honor. The energy from the hometown crowd made it truly unforgettable.

A smiling man with a beard wears a green Nike polo shirt with a white collar and a "UAB" logo on the chest. Years on Squad: 2007–2009

Favorite Sparty Memories: In 2008, it was announced that Sparty would be on the cover of EA Sports’ new “NCAA Football 09 All-Play.” The final came down to Sparty and Butch T. Cougar of WSU. Sparty managed victory in the last hours of the competition. It was HUGE that Sparty graced the cover of a major video game. It’s a bit disappointing that the game isn’t very good, but I still proudly own two copies!

          Major: French
          Years on Squad: 2005–2007

Favorite Sparty Memories: In 2006, mascots raced with kids. The rule was to let the kids win. A kid’s parent told him he’d race against Sparty and he’d remember this forever. The kid won but with Sparty’s limited vision, I didn’t see him stop. My knee connected with the middle of his back and sent him into a crumbling heap. The fans from this other school rained boos incessantly and I hope that no-longer-a-kid still remembers that race.

Sparty, the Michigan State University mascot, playfully swings a large sledgehammer prop at the opposing team's mascot, who is crouched on the football field.

Sparty has his arm around the man and is giving a thumbs-up. The background features elegant chandeliers and warm lighting, suggesting a celebratory or formal event. Favorite Sparty Memories: We were playing Rutgers and MSU gave us a van to take Sparty to New Jersey. We had extra time, so we took a trip to Times Square and then the UN Building to take photos, but armed guards came out. We said Sparty was giving extra muscle to keep things secure. They demanded we leave. The NYPD walked us back and asked for a photo. They thought it was hilarious!

Favorite Sparty Memories: Every summer, Sparty joined “Mascot Camp” with the cheer and dance teams, where fun was nonstop and friendships grew. I met MSU’s head cheer coach there, a beautiful girl studying civil engineering like me. We grew close, studied together and attended MSU events. 19 years of marriage and two great kids later, it’s been an amazing journey from the tunnel to marriage!

Favorite Sparty Memories: Mascot camp had to be one of the most fun, unique experiences of my life. The fun, creativity, shenanigans and environment — you really can’t even explain the energy. I always tell the story of how all the cheerleaders wanted to go to bed early and be disciplined, while all the mascots wanted to go out and party all night.

Favorite Sparty Memories: The 2000 Final Four send-off rally was an exhilarating event. Also, seeing fans from the top row of Spartan Stadium at the last game as Sparty was a memorable moment. The most moving experience was running out with the American flag during the first home game after 9/11.

Favorite Sparty Memories: I was headed back to our dressing room when someone asked if Sparty could visit a private party. Curious, I agreed. I walked in and it was Mohammed Ali. I was amazed, here I am as the biggest mascot in the world and he is bigger than Sparty. He leaned in and said “You look good, but I am still the Champ.” I’ll cherish that moment forever.

I was going to forfeit being Sparty to care for her, but she told me that was not an option. Gratefully, the squad was patient and understanding when I tried to balance student life with my daughter life. My superfan was able to see me as Sparty twice before she passed in Nov. 1997.
