Indy Spartans Reach Goal of Endowing Scholarship

The Indy Spartans are celebrating the endowment of their scholarship in July 2021, nearly two years ahead of schedule.

The Indy Spartans represent more than 2,000 Michigan State University alumni and friends across the Metro Indianapolis area.

While all gifts to MSU contribute to high quality education, research and outreach, endowed scholarships are a particularly meaningful way for alumni clubs and affinity groups to offer the priceless MSU experience to students in their hometown. The Indy Spartans not only took advantage of this opportunity, but they joined forces as a community to exceed funding expectations for future Spartans.

The Indiana Spartans Endowed Scholarship was created to help students from the state of Indiana attend Michigan State University. The scholarship was officially endowed in July 2021 — nearly two years ahead of schedule. Incoming, current and transfer students who are residents of the state of Indiana are eligible for this award. Recipients shall be students who have demonstrated financial need, but who do not otherwise benefit from institutional or grant aid. Awards shall be renewable for up to eight semesters as long as the recipient maintains a minimum grade point average of 3.0.

Out-of-State tuition is a major barrier for Indiana students when considering MSU and this scholarship seeks to make the price more manageable for students. The scholarship is entirely funded by donors — many of whom are MSU alumni who want to help the next generation become Spartans.

One of the best ways to help students make college education a reality is through the creation of an endowed scholarship. An endowment is a permanent fund in which the principal remains intact and invested at all times. These contributions provide support for students who need it the most. A steady stream of funding supports the university’s goal of recruiting and retaining the best and brightest students and faculty. It also provides students with access to the most contemporary education possible to prepare graduates for success in their desired field.

“Indiana has an abundance of kids that want to spread their wings… so to speak,” said Indy Spartans board member, Jeff Gulvas. “I get the impression that Indiana students, in general, are more open to out-of-state options. MSU is one of many drivable options. We need to focus our attention on some reciprocity agreements to incentivize the best and brightest!”

Alumni clubs, like the Indy Spartans, are investing in the success of current and future Spartans by making significant contributions to the recruitment of students and the funding of scholarships. Learn more about how alumni clubs are supporting students attending MSU.
