Jade Elder is a senior from Wayne, Michigan double majoring in communication and interdisciplinary studies of social science. She also has three minors: migration studies, sociology, and youth and society. She serves as an American Semester Program and Exchange ambassador where she welcomes students who are studying abroad from another country or part of an exchange program and a research assistant at the Adolescent Development and the Justice System Lab. She is also a Social Science Scholar who researches the impacts of mass incarceration on youth and migration studies, as well as a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholar, allowing her to study abroad and gain a better understanding of other cultures. She currently dedicates her time to being the service vice president for the Spartan Alternative Spring Break program, where she helps plan domestic and international community service trips for students. During the COVID-19 pandemic she worked as an event coordinator for the University Activity Board by using virtual platforms including events that promoted cultural inclusivity and awareness amongst various student groups. She has dedicated her time at MSU by making the university and the community around her a better place.

“I think that part that makes MSU special is the amount of opportunities that are available to students  to make the most of their time here, whether that is professional development, experiential learning, or self-care.  Every year I learn about a new opportunity that is available to me and I will continue to work towards building a well-rounded experience while studying at Michigan State University.”
