MSU Traditions: Beal Botanical Garden

This Garden Remains. Spartans Remain.

In 2023, the MSU W.J. Beal Botanical Garden celebrated its 150th anniversary as the oldest, continuously operated university botanical garden in the United States. A favorite location on campus for generations of students, faculty and staff, Beal Botanical Garden is a living legacy of all the Spartans who have walked MSU’s campus.

Listen as the voices of W.J. Beal, MSU students and the garden itself remind you that Spartans Remain, Spartans Persevere and Spartans Will.

Beal Garden is open to everyone, year-round, sunrise to sunset, and is always free. It is listed on the Michigan State Register of Historic Places with information about the Garden and Professor Beal on historical markers.
