A PHOTO CONTEST FOR ALUMS

Now in its third year, a photo competition for alumni, staff and students showcases MSU’s global focus in living color.

A week’s stay in Hillton Head.  Free round-trip ticket.  Specialty wide-angle lenses.  Many other prizes that are perfect for travelers.

Prizes like these have helped to drive many MSU alums to participate in the annual MSU Global Focus photo competition, now in its third year.  As many of the winning entries, exhibited below, show, MSU people are strongly engaged around the globe, whether in official capacities or as pleasure travelers.

And that’s what is underscored by this photo contest, sponsored by the MSU Office of International Studies and Programs with the assistance and cooperation from the MSU Alumni Association.

"We developed this annual competition to encourage MSU's international travelers, such as study abroad students, faculty involved in international development projects, and participants in alumni travel programs, to document their experiences,” says Jay Rodman, director of the competition.  “MSU is arguably one of the top universities in the nation in terms of international education.  By displaying the winning photos in our buildings, on our website, and in our publications, we not only let the world know how internationally involved this institution is, but we also enhance our environment with beautiful works of art."

Rodman adds that he hopes to attract more than 300 entries, and especially looks forward to receiving more entries from alumni.

These activities might increase in the wake of President Peter McPherson’s 9th State Of The University Address in February, when he said,  “we and other universities across this country should answer the wake up call of September 11 and expand our international engagement. “

The annual photo competition is open to students, faculty and alumni, and in each category there are first-, second- and third-place winners, plus a number of “honorable mention” awards.  Sub-categories include students, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees, MSU Alumni Association members.  The entries must be submitted by a specific date, yet to be determined, in early October, 2002.
