Commencement Scroll Art Contest

Third-Year Student Art Contest

Accepting art submissions until April 1, 2024.

Third-year students are invited to submit original artwork for use in a custom class of 2024-25 commemorative poster. The winning poster will be distributed to all graduates during their commencement ceremonies.

The contest is open to all current MSU students that have reached third year credit hour status and/or expect to graduate in fall 2024 or spring 2025.

The submission period for artwork is from February 1 to April 1.

All entries must be submitted via the online submission form. There is a maximum of one submission per student.

Entries can be submitted as a high quality JPEG image, scan or photo. Each entry must be labeled with:

  • Last Name, First Name.

Please retain the original artwork as the winning piece will be required to create the final high image for replication and distribution.

Guidelines

Entries must be a two-dimensional print or photograph. All traditional and contemporary forms of media will be accepted including but not limited to drawing, painting, illustration, collage, animation, and photography.

Criteria and Selection

All submissions are reviewed and judged by a committee comprised of current MSU students and faculty/staff. Student committee members are at the same academic level and are representative of the corresponding graduating class.

Artwork submitted will be judged on the following:

  • Interpretation and clarity.
  • Quality of the artistic composition and overall design.
  • Color, tone and balance of the artwork.
  • Overall impression and the effect the artwork has on the viewer.
  • Is the artwork applicable and/or representative of the broader MSU community?

Notification

The artist of the winning entry will be notified no later than Friday, April 14, 2024.

Use Rights

By submitting artwork, the student grants Michigan State University permission to reproduce (without remuneration) the selected artwork. The student/artist also attests to the originality of the design submitted.

The artist gives permission to Michigan State University, the MSU Alumni Office, the Provost’s Office, and the Commencement Office to use the winning artwork for all promotions (present and future) associated with the designated graduating class.
